Tongkat Ali coffee is a combination of regular coffee and the dietary supplement known as Tongkat Ali. The supplement is derived from the roots and bark of a shrub indigenous to Southeast Asia (Eurycoma longifolia).
Throughout this region, and especially in Malaysia, the plant has been used for generations in traditional folk medicine for its anti-microbial, anti-malarial and anti-diabetic effects, as well as for its purported aphrodisiac properties.
In traditional Malaysian therapies, Tongkat Ali extract is often added to drinks and foods, as in the case with Tongkat Ali coffee.
The supplement is so popular throughout Southeast Asia that the plant it is derived from is considered a protected species in some countries to maintain the wild populations. The tree is cultivated in Malaysia and the supplement is available in many countries around the world.
